Title : American Boys of Summer Medium : Oil pastel 27" x 42" Intent: Baseball is the American pastime, yet Black men were not allowed to play in the major Leagues. The reason not for lack of talent, but simply because they were Black. Being black kept them from performing for more crowds, competing against and with White Major Leaguers, and from having their stats, and records officially recognized. A few years ago ESPN voted their top 100 Athletes of the 20th. century. On their list were Golfers, females, and horses, but no Negro league players. Babe Ruth made number 2 overall, and Josh Gibson who's stats were equal, or better than Ruth's is still unknown to most people.
