Name of artist: Sonali Kolhatkar Title of Work: September 11th Nightmare? Medium: Acrylic on canvas, 28" x 22" Description: Completed only days after the tragedy of 9-11, this image depicts the intense conflicting emotions felt by the artist: from flag- waving new "patriots" targeting brown people, to the big guns of the US empire pointed directly at other brown people a world away, the September 11th nightmare was an assault on all our senses. Two years later, the intensity of emotion felt in this work reflects the reality of the U.S.’s big guns pointed at the neck of humanity. Title of Work: What is the sound of Bombs Falling? Medium: Acrylic on canvas, 24" x 20" Description: This work is intended to document the response of a woman of color to a new and dangerous era of endless war initiated by the West toward the Global South. It is explicitly an anti-war, anti-empire statement, forcing us to visualize the targets of our bombs, human and frail, naked and defenseless. Brown people are citizens of an empire which targets our brown brothers and sisters back home. The U.S. empire uses the advantage of lethal air- power to bomb whole villages and communities that cannot even be visualized by the individual bomber. This work depicts both the empire's citizens and its victims: the US's "war on terror" is the terror itself which we cannot hide from even as we close our eyes and ears and cover our heads.
