The public is invited to attend the opening, meet
the artists, and enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, door prizes, and gift bags.
The celebration continues through December 31 with a three-month long series of
programming including a poetry reading and film screenings.
Following three successful shows in Los
Angeles, this is the first New York exhibition. Recognizing that ART is the
most powerful vehicle for expression and that DEMOCRACY deals with the Rights
of Society as a whole, artists have submitted works and proposals of all media
relating to the political and social struggles of our world and the human
desire for civil liberties.
Participating artists include Taiwan-born
Long-bin Chen, known for his sculptures and installations carved from telephone
books and Yellow Pages. Special for this exhibition, Chen has created a limited
edition of wearable “Book Art Jewelry for Democracy” - circular pendants and
fan-shaped earrings. These one-of-a-kind pieces will be available for purchase,
with half of all donations benefitting the Visual Artists Guild.
Award-winning Chilean artist Guillermo Bert
will feature his ironic Bar Code Series, images burnt on wood, plastic or board
surfaces with industrial techniques and layered in gold-leaf or red, white, and
blue glossy candy enamel. The color palettes reference catholic or universal
intent of religiosity (the sacred) and American nationalism (secularism).
