Background Information:
In the Spring of 1989, Beijing erupted with the largest spontaneous demonstrations the Peoples Republic of China had witnessed in its 40-year history. The pro-democracy movement quickly spread to over 40 cities around China before the world witnessed the horrors of the government's brutal crackdown. As the Chinese people fled from the tanks and guns, they asked the international press to let the world know the truth. They asked the world not to forget.
Visual Artists Guild is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) all volunteers' organization. Established in 1985, its mission is to champion the right of Freedom of Speech and Expression.
Our Honorees for 2026:
Gloria Fung 馮玉蘭
Gloria Fung has been a strong advocate for international social justice, democracy and human rights for over 50 years. In 1989, as a HongKonger, she joined Beijing citizens and students blocking tanks and military trucks from entering the city and witnessed the Tiananmen massacre.
She is the Past President of Canada-Hong Kong Link, a Canadian non-profit community organization established in 1997 to promote democracy, freedom, the rule of law and human rights in Hong Kong. Gloria has actively coordinated global support for the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong since its handover to China, especially during the Umbrella Movement and the Anti-Extradition Bill Movement.
She is the former National Vice President of the Chinese Canadian National Council, promoting the full participation of Chinese Canadians in all aspects of society. She is a political commentator for Canadian and international media on issues related to Canada, China, and Hong Kong.
She is the founder and co-convenor of the Canadian Coalition for a Foreign Influence Transparency Registry consisting of representatives from 33 multicultural communities. In 2024 this coalition was instrumental in getting legislation passed in Parliament to create the registry and combat foreign interference and transnational repression
Heng Guan 關恆
While still living in China, Heng Guan became deeply troubled after reading international reports about the mass detention of Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang. In 2020 He made the extraordinary decision to travel to Xinjiang as a Han Chinese citizen because foreign journalists were barred from freely accessing the region. He secretly film detention centers primarily holding Uyghurs. These facilities were part of a sweeping campaign initiated under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, aimed at forcibly reshaping Uyghur identity and eradicating what authorities described as dangerous ideas linked to resistance and extremism.
Heng’s footage documented vast compounds with imposing walls, guard towers, and barbed wire—striking visual evidence of a system long shrouded in secrecy. These images became some of the rare firsthand documentation revealing the scale and severity of China’s crackdown on Uyghurs.
His story gained wider recognition after being reported by The Wall Street Journal and receiving support from U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi.
Arthur Liu 劉俊
Mr. Arthur Liu was born in 1964 in a remote mountain village in China's Sichuan Province, raised during an era of profound political awakening. When the 1989 Tiananmen Democracy Movement erupted, he was a student at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. He organized numerous demonstrations and hunger strikes in solidarity with the students in Beijing, calling for democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. When the June 4th crackdown occurred, he was placed on the government's "wanted list," becoming the number one wanted individual in Guangzhou.
At the age of 25, he was forced to flee to the United States as a refugee. Arriving penniless and starting from scratch, he earned his law degree from the California State University through an unyielding spirit of perseverance. He eventually founded his own law firm and became a practicing attorney dedicated to the pursuit of justice.
Over the years, despite living abroad, he has repeatedly faced transnational repression. On the eve of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the U.S. Department of Justice identified him as a primary target of CCP espionage (codenamed "Dissident 3"). Faced with threats including surveillance, stalking, and passport fraud, he resolutely chose to expose the truth and cooperate with federal investigations. He has also organized multiple protests at the Chinese Consulate, steadfastly defending his family’s safety and the fundamental right to free speech. Undaunted by intimidation, Mr. Liu has demonstrated extraordinary moral courage. He is not only a pillar of strength for his family but also a symbol of resistance against totalitarian infiltration and a champion of free expression.
Alysa Liu 劉美賢
Born in 2005 Alysa Liu is a legendary American figure skater. She is the 2026 Winter Olympic champion in both the women's singles and the team event, the 2025 World champion. She is not only a legend on the ice but also the embodiment of courage and integrity.
As the daughter of Arthur Liu, Alysa’s path to the gold medal was fraught with political pressures unknown to other skaters. During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, at only 16 years old, she bravely traveled to Beijing to compete, even after learning that she and her father were being targeted by CCP espionage threats. She refused to bow to intimidation and has courageously spoken out for various ethnic and minority groups on multiple occasions.Alysa once remarked of her father: "My father has a backbone, so I have one too."
Through her gold medals and global influence, Alysa has proven to the world that excellence in sportsmanship and a steadfast moral compass are deeply interconnected. With her outstanding athletic spirit and her genuine concern for marginalized communities, she perfectly exemplifies the legacy of the "Tiananmen Spirit" in the younger generation: to be fearless, to seek the truth, and to forge ahead.
